Sleep Apnea

It is now estimated that 26 percent of adults (one out of four) between the ages of 30 and 70 years have sleep apnea.

In adults, the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is excess weight and obesity, which is associated with soft tissue of the mouth and throat. During sleep, when throat and tongue muscles are more relaxed, this soft tissue can cause the airway to become blocked.

The signs and symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas overlap, sometimes making it difficult to determine which type you have. The common signs and symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep — which would be reported by another person
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Awakening with a dry mouth
  • Morning headache
  • Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia)
  • Difficulty paying attention while awake
  • Uncontrolled High Blood pressure
  • Irregular Heart Rhythm / Palpitation
  • Increased chance of Motor Vehicle accident
  • Depression / Anxiety / Irritability
  • Erectile Dysfunction/ Low Libido
  • Indigestion/ Heart burn
  • Weight Gain or Unable to lose weight
  • Memory Problem / Impaired concentration
